Identifying factors affecting the commercialization of defense technologies with a reactive approach, a technology developed at Malek Ashtar University of Technology

Abstract

Background & Purpose: Defense organizations in our country are always looking for commercialization of technologies developed in their organizations. Among the approaches to technology commercialization, the reactive approach is more consistent with the commercialization of defense technologies. Because commercialization in this sector often occurs as a secondary goal and after achieving defense goals. This research seeks to identify the factors that have led to the success of commercialization of a defense technology at Malek Ashtar University of Technology.
Methodology: The present research is a mixed research in terms of applied purpose and data collection method. In order to review the literature on the subject and identify factors affecting commercialization, library studies were used and in order to adapt and localize these factors in the field of defense technologies, interviews were conducted with experts from defense organizations. Then, the analytical hierarchy process was used to rank the factors. For this purpose, a paired comparison questionnaire was distributed and the results were analyzed using Excel software.
Findings: The results of this study were expressed in the form of 5 main factors and 30 components. The results show that the factors and components of the market (use of effective marketing and advertising methods), individual (motivation), organization (support and backing of leaders and senior managers of the organization), environment (observance of intellectual property rights) and technology (existence of alternative and competing technologies) are respectively the most important in the commercialization of the studied technology.
Conclusion: The findings of this study can help improve the commercialization processes of defense technologies that have been developed at Malek Ashtar University of Technology. Paying attention to marketing and advertising methods and competing technologies on the one hand and providing the necessary mechanisms to motivate employees have positive effects on the commercialization of technologies at this university.
